Olivia Colman’s metallic Dior Oscars dress took 200 hours to make

The 2022 Oscars, which took place last night at the Dolby Theatre in LA, marked a welcome return to the ceremony in its full glory, after a smaller, socially distanced event was held last year.

Naturally, the annual Academy Awards calls for some high-octane glamour, and Olivia Colman was one of the stars to embrace high-shine metallics on the Oscars red carpet last night. The actress stepped out wearing a silver pleated lamé Dior gown, custom-made for her by womenswear creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri.

The elegant dress featured a high neck and belted waist, with theatrical exaggerated flared sleeves. It had a team of four people working on the intricate design, and took a total of 200 hours to construct and finish.

Colman’s longtime stylist, Miranda Almond, collaborated with Dior on the bespoke design, which took inspiration from the brand’s Grecian-themed Cruise 2022 collection.

“The idea was to create something that would float down the carpet and feel super light, yet have an old-school glamour element,” Almond tells us, of the dress. “[I wanted to] help Olivia shine.”

The pair have been working together for years, so much so that Almond now intuitively knows what the actress will love and look good in.

“It’s so nice to know instinctively what will work and what won’t, but to push it in new but subtle ways sometimes,” she explains, adding that when dressing a client for the red carpet she’s always aiming to create “something magical that doesn’t overwhelm the wearer. She has to feel comfortable but special and glamorous and empowered.”

Naturally, this meant that Colman loved the gown the second she tried it on. “It made her glow from the first fitting,” says the stylist.

They added glittering Chopard jewellery as the perfect finishing touch – in the form of delicate droplet earrings and matching diamond rings.

Colman had been nominated in the Leading Actress category for the 2022 Academy Awards, thanks to her performance in The Lost Daughter. Despite losing out to Jessica Chastain, the actress looked in high spirits, later attending one of the many after-parties with her husband, Ed Sinclair.

Olivia Coleman dazzles at the Oscars in a floor-length metallic silver gown

Best actress nominee Olivia Coleman looked stunning in a metallic silver pleated gown as she graced the red carpet at the Oscars 2022.

The Oscar-winning actress, who was nominated for her role in The Lost Daughter this year, turned heads in the floor-length number by Dior.

The gown had a high neckline, a flowing A-line skirt, and a flattering marked waist thanks to a thin silver belt.

It came complete with dramatic flute sleeves in a look that was the epitome of old Hollywood glamour. Ed Sinclair, her husband since 2001, joined her on the red carpet.

To compliment the glitz, the actress wore stunning diamond chandelier earrings by Chopard.

The 94th annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Olivia Coleman was nominated for her leading role in The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, but the accolade was won by Jessica Chastain for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, later in the evening.

The much-celebrated actress previously took home the best actress award in 2019 for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite.

It wasn’t just Olivia’s outfit that conjured up images of classic Hollywood glamour.

Nicole Kidman walked the red carpet in a stunning, custom-made designer gown to mark her best actress nomination for her role in Being the Ricardos. While Judi Dench stunned in an all white ensemble as she attended the event.

However, hearts were stolen by Jamie Lee Curtis’ very special guest, an adorable puppy.

The Crown’s Olivia Colman stuns in chic all-velvet look

Suited and booted for her latest red carpet appearance, Olivia Colman looked absolutely regal on Friday as she attended the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Donning a statement two-piece suit from Armani Prive, The Crown star’s velvet jacket certainly turned heads thanks to its glittering silver panels and military-style buttons.

Accessorised to perfection, Olivia added a hint of sparkle to her outfit as she stepped out in metallic silver heels and dangly diamond earrings. Sweeping her brunette hair back into a sleek updo, the actress opted for natural and dewy makeup as she combined a grey smokey eye with a honey-hued blusher and a berry-kissed lip gloss – divine.

In love with Olivia’s elegant ensemble? You might be surprised by just how easy it is to recreate her designer look for less.

Retailing at a total of £338, Reiss’ luxurious velvet blazer, £268, looks so chic teamed with the high-waisted ‘Poppy’ trousers, now reduced to £70 in the sale. A timeless and versatile outfit that’ll never go out of style, the brand recommends accessorising with strappy sandals and a shimmering silk vest.

If you’re searching for something with an even lower price point, then Nasty Gal has you covered. Priced at an affordable £33, this velvet padded blazer is almost identical to Olivia’s with its statement pointed shoulders and tailored fit. While the jacket is a stand-alone piece, there are plenty of velvet trousers available on the high street; you could even mix and match with Reiss’ high-waisted pair.

While fans of The Crown prepare to watch Imelda Staunton take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II in series five of the hit Netflix show, Olivia has been seriously switching up projects. Set to play a fantasist murderer in the upcoming Sky drama, Landscapers, the actress’ latest role is a far cry from her critically acclaimed portrayal of the British monarch

Back in 2019, Olivia told HELLO! of her great respect for the Queen, having played her during some of the darkest days of her reign, including the Aberfan tragedy, the oil crisis and miners’ strikes, along with her own family conflicts in the run-up to the Silver Jubilee.

Speaking ahead of the premiere for the third series of The Crown, Olivia said: “Having never really considered what I thought of her and now having played her, I think she is extraordinary. She said she would serve her country and that is what she has done – and she is now in her 90s and still serving her country. I think she is amazing. I would have definitely retired by now!”
